Der Puls (lateinisch pulsus, „Stoß“, wie lateinisch pulsare „klopfen“, von lateinisch pellere „schlagen, stoßen“) beschreibt seit der Antike (etwa bei dem alexandrinischen Arzt Herophilos um 300 v. Chr.) die mechanischen Auswirkungen der durch den systolischen Blutausstoß vom Herz stammenden Druck- und Volumenschwankung (Pulswelle) auf die direkte Umgebung oder deren Fortleitung in entferntere Regionen des Körpers durch das Blutgefäßsystem. Als Puls bezeichnet man sowohl die Frequenz der beim Pulszählen erfassbaren Druckstöße (Anzahl pro Minute; zum Unterschied dieser Pulsfrequenz zur Herzfrequenz vgl. Pulsdefizit) als auch deren Amplitude und Verlauf (Pulsqualität, z. B. „weicher“, „schwacher“ oder „schwirrender“ Puls). Im Gefäßsystem breitet sich der Puls als Welle aus mit lokalen Zeitverläufen jeweils des Drucks, der Querschnittsfläche und des Volumenstroms bzw. der Strömungsgeschwindigkeit. Ein Maß für die Schwankungen der Pulsfrequenz im Zeitablauf ist der Pulsvarianzindex.
