Prace nad wydawnictwem rozpoczęły się we wrześniu 2008 zaś zakończyły w marcu 2010 natomiast do współpracy artystka zaprosiła producentów Franka E, Davida Fostera, Vincenta Herberta, Craiga Kallmana, Steve'a Maca, Harveya Masona Jr., Oaka, Lucasa Secona, Troya Taylora oraz Dapo Torimira. Pulse to krążek zróżnicowany muzycznie charakteryzujący się zarówno brzmieniami R&B jak i melodiami gatunku muzyki dance.
