Sign in to savePythium is a genus of parasitic oomycetes. They were formerly classified as fungi. Most species are plant parasites, but Pythium insidiosum is an important pathogen of animals and human, causing pythiosis. The feet of the fungus gnat are frequently a vector for their transmission.

Pythium ist eine Gattung parasitischer Eipilze. Sie wurden früher zu den Pilzen gestellt, sind aber eher mit Braunalgen und Goldalgen verwandt. Die meisten Arten sind Pflanzen-Parasiten, jedoch ist Pythium insidiosum ein bedeutender Krankheitserreger bei Tieren, der Pythiosis hervorruft. Die Füße von Trauermücken sind häufig Vektoren zu ihrer Übertragung.
