Encyclopedic overview
NGC 4488 is a peculiar lenticular galaxy located in the constellation of Virgo. Its velocity with respect to the cosmic microwave background is 1,317±24 km/s, which corresponds to a Hubble distance of 63.3 ± 4.6 Mly (19.42 ± 1.40 Mpc). However, one non-redshift measurement gives a much closer distance of 26.26 Mly (8.050 Mpc). The galaxy was discovered by astronomer William Herschel on December 28, 1785. NGC 4488 is a member of the Virgo Cluster.
