Leonard Agcaoili On January 29, 2024, for the first time in the history of the parish, the bishops of the Philippines gathered at Quiapo Church for its solemn declaration as the National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno. The Holy Mass was led by Cardinal Advincula, Bishop Pablo Virgilio David (President of the CBCP) and the Apostolic Nuncio, Most Rev. Charles John Brown. The clergy, religious and devotees jubilantly witnessed this special milestone as a testament to the passionate love and devotion of the Filipinos to the Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno. On October 3, 2024, Jose Cardinal Advincula decreed that the official title of Quiapo Church is the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno (Basilika Menor at Pambansang Dambana ni Jesus Nazareno), St. John the Baptist Parish. The January 9 fiesta observance became officially known as Nazareno 2023 to focus on Jesus our Lord as the center of the celebrations. It was subtitled Debosyon-Traslacion-Misyon to catechize the people that their devotion and procession must lead to mission as witnesses and disciples of Christ. The practice of starting the Fiesta Masses in honor of the Nazareno at Quiapo Church on January 8, 3:00pm until 11:00pm of January 9 began to accommodate the countless devotees who fervently desire to attend the Holy Mass during the fiesta. On May 7, 2023, Quiapo Church was declared the Archdiocesan Shrine of Jesus Nazareno by Jose Cardinal Advincula. After being away for about 40 years, on June 24, 2023, the original image of St. John the Baptist, that has been at the main altar with the Nazareno in the 1898 church, was returned to Quiapo Church. It is now enshrined in the baptistry. On July 9, 2023, upon the petition of Cardinal Advincula and Fr. Rufino Sescon Jr., the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), during its 126th Plenary Assembly, approved Quiapo Church to become the 29th national shrine in the Philippines and the parochial feast of January 9 to become a national feast. Msgr. Jose Clemente Ignacio institutionalized the Traslacion route from Luneta to Quiapo. From then on, millions of devotees would pay homage for the pahalik and Holy Mass at the Quirino Grandstand and then join the procession. In September 28, 1987, His Eminence, Jaime Cardinal Sin blessed the newly remodeled church and sought recognition of the church as a Minor Basilica. In December 11, 1987, His Holiness, Pope (later Saint) John Paul II granted the recognition of Quiapo Church as the Minor Basilica of the Nazarene because of its role in strengthening a deep popular devotion to Jesus Christ and its cultural contribution to the religiosity of the Filipino people. The declaration rites took place on Feb. 1, 1988 led by the Apostolic Nuncio, Most Rev. Bruno Torpigliani, D.D. In 1989, through the generosity of the people of Quiapo and Devotees of the Nazareno, five bronze bells and three electronic clocks were acquired from Holland. Msgr. Josefino Ramirez had the Traslacion procession begin in Luneta, retracing the origins of the Nuestro Padre from Bagumbayan to Intramuros and then to Quiapo. Quiapo Church survived the ravage of World War II bombings. The image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Antipolo) sought refuge in Quiapo in the midst of the war. On January 18, 1964, Archbishop Rufino Santos, D.D. reconsecrated the new altar of the renovated sanctuary and church through the efforts of then parish priest, Bishop Pedro Bantigue. The expansion of the church was initiated by Msgr. Jose Abriol to accommodate the growing population of the devotees.
