Many historic sights and artifacts have however been destroyed or lost during the fight to liberate the city. As of early 2020 the local government is still struggling to bring back basic services, however efforts have been made to save and restore some of the historic buildings and sights within the city.

Shared taxi is the most common way of getting around with in the city, walking is an option in the centre. Be aware that many buildings are still in rubble and can be hazardous.

Ar-Rakka, Rakka (arab. ‏الرقة‎, kurd. Reqa, w anglojęzycznych mediach często Raqqah; staroż. Nikeforion, Kallinikos) – miasto w północnej Syrii nad Eufratem, ośrodek administracyjny muhafazy Ar-Rakka, największe miasto Regionu Ar-Rakka w składzie Rożawy, przy czym jest to miasto arabskie, a nie kurdyjskie, a głównym wyznaniem mieszkańców jest sunnizm; 270 tysięcy mieszkańców (2021). Od 2013 roku, po I bitwie o Ar-Rakkę, nie jest kontrolowane przez syryjski rząd. Od stycznia 2014 do października 2017 stanowiło nieformalną stolicę nieuznawanego samozwańczego Państwa Islamskiego, choć przez społeczność międzynarodową uważane jest za część terytorium Syrii. W przeszłości jeden z głównych ośrodków górnomezopotamskiego regionu Dijar Mudar (arab. ‏ديار مضر‎, Diyār Muḍar), nazwanego tak od osiadłego tam plemienia arabskiego Muḍar. Rakka była siedzibą abbasydzkiego kalifa Harun ar-Raszida (786–809) utożsamianego z Szachrijarem z Księgi tysiąca i jednej nocy. Składało się właściwie z dwóch miast, jednego o znanej dziś nazwie, a drugiego zwanego Ar-Rafika (arab. ‏الرافقة‎, Al-Rāfiqa). Z czasów abbasydzkiej świetności miasta zachowane są Brama Bagdadzka i Pałac Dziewcząt (arab. ‏قصر البنات‎, trl. Qaṣr al-Banāt, trb. Kasr al-Banat).
