Massey was born in Toronto, Ontario, the son of Anna (née Vincent), who was born in Illinois, and Chester Daniel Massey, the wealthy owner of the Massey-Ferguson Tractor Company. Massey's family could trace their ancestry back to the American Revolutionary War.
