Robert Smithson (2 janvier 1938 – 20 juillet 1973) est un artiste américain représentatif, entre autres, de l'Art minimal et l'un des fondateurs du Land art. Auteur de nombreux textes critiques et théoriques largement diffusés par les revues d'art américaines (parfois en collaboration, avec Mel Bochner par exemple), le médium imprimé lui donne la possibilité de développer les aspects discursifs, spéculatifs et documentaires de son travail. Le Land art est apparu dans les années 1960, alors que le mouvement écologiste aux États-Unis était en pleine croissance.
