During the 19th century, it was a popular British tourist destination, known for its Ottoman mansions, citrus groves and relative cleanliness. The Rosetta Stone was discovered here in 1799, but it is now on permanent display at the British Museum in London.

Roseta (em árabe: رشيد‎, transl. Rashid) é uma cidade da província egípcia de Al-Buhaira, localizada a 65 km a leste de Alexandria, nas 31° 24' N 30° 25' E. Foi fundada por volta do ano 800. É um porto no mar Mediterrâneo. Com o declínio de Alexandria após a conquista otomana do Egito no século XVI, a cidade de Roseta teve uma expansão, sofrendo um declínio após a recuperação de Alexandria. Durante o século XIX, era um local muito frequentado por turistas britânicos, conhecido por suas charmosas mansões otomanas, vias arborizadas e por sua limpeza. Atualmente é mais conhecida por ser o lugar onde foi encontrada a Pedra de Roseta, descoberta pelo exército francês sob o comando de Napoleão, em 1799. A cidade tinha uma população de 51 789 habitantes em 1986, e 68 947 em 2006.
