==Toponymy== The town appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as , which is from the Old Norse meaning "Skuma's homestead", a site which is believed to be in the town centre, close to Market Hill. Today Skuma’s homestead means ‘A secondary settlement, a dependent outlying farmstead or hamlet’.
