Il Serchio è uno dei principali fiumi della Toscana, il terzo della regione per lunghezza (111 km) dopo l'Arno e l'Ombrone, e il secondo per portata media alla foce (46,1 m³/s).Ove si considerino però la regolarità di regime e le portate minime estive, il Serchio, con i suoi 11 m³/s (dei quali quasi metà dovuti al fiume Lima), è il maggiore della regione.
