Servus, and various local variants thereof, is a salutation used in many parts of Central and Eastern Europe, derived from Latin for 'slave, servant'. It is a word of greeting or parting like the Italian (which also comes from the 'slave' meaning through Venetian ).

Servus is een Latijnse begroeting. Het staat letterlijk voor dienaar of slaaf en betekent dus zoveel als tot uw dienst. Met servus groet men vriendschappelijker dan bijvoorbeeld met het formelere goede dag. Men kan het woord zowel bij verwelkoming als bij afscheid gebruiken. Grammaticaal is servus mannelijk (meer bepaald de nominatief enkelvoud), maar ook vrouwen zeggen servus, niet serva.
