From ancient watchtower to beloved local landmark, discover the rich past and vibrant present of Severndroog Castle. Severndroog Castle is an 18th-century Gothic tower nestled in the ancient woodland of Shooter’s Hill, southeast London. With its striking architecture, rich history and far-reaching rooftop views, it remains a much-loved local landmark and a rare Georgian folly open to the public. The Castle was Built as a memorial to Commodore Sir William James in 1784 by his wife Lady Anne James following the death of her husband in 1783. It commemorates his naval victory over the Indian fortress of Suvarnadurg – the anglicised name of which gives the Castle its name. Its distinctive triangular structure, complete with three turrets, stands 132 metres above sea level and offers panoramic views across London and beyond. Today, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. Over the centuries, Severndroog has been many things – a strategic memorial, a place of learning, a public lookout, and even a tearoom. But by the late 20th century, it had fallen into disrepair and was closed to the public in 1988. Following a passionate community-led campaign, Severndroog was saved and restored by the Severndroog Castle Building Preservation Trust. Reopened in 2014, it is now once again a place for the community to enjoy – and a beacon on the hill once more. Severndroog Castle may be small in size, but it holds a remarkable story. Built in the 18th century as a romantic memorial, it has stood for centuries above the London skyline – a place of tribute, retreat, and community. Discover the events and people that shaped this unique tower’s past. After decades of neglect and near-abandonment, Severndroog Castle was saved by a passionate group of local volunteers who refused to let it fade into history. Their determination led to an ambitious restoration project that brought the Castle back to life, preserving it for future generations and reopening its doors to the public in 2014. This is the story of how a community rescued a local treasure. The Severndroog Castle Building Preservation Trust was formed by a group of local residents determined to save the Castle from private sale and preserve it for the public. Since 2003, the Trust has worked to protect this historic landmark, restore it to its former glory, and ensure it remains a space for education, community, and reflection. Today, the Trust continues to care for the Castle and its legacy, with the help of dedicated volunteers, donors, and supporters.
