Askeran ( or , ; ) is an Armenian town in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan. Until 2023 it was controlled by the breakaway Republic of Artsakh, as the centre of its Askeran Province. The town had an ethnic Armenian-majority population until the expulsion of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijan following the 2023 Azerbaijani offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh. It is located on the left bank of the Karkar/Gargarchay River, approximately northeast of the regional capital, Stepanakert.

==Etymology== Medieval Armenian sources attest to a settlement in the locale called Mayraberd (). The modern name Askeran () refers to the settlement's historic use from the beginning of the 18th century as an arsenal for various military powers.
