Sinjar (Koerdisch: Şengal/شنگال) is een plaats in de provincie Ninawa, Noordwest-Irak. De populatie was in 2006: 39.875 mensen. De inwoners van de stad zijn voornamelijk Koerdische jezidi's met een kleine groep Koerdische Soennieten. De stad werd tot ongeveer eind augustus 2014 bestuurd door de Iraakse regering. De status van de stad is nog niet uitgeklaard. Volgens artikel 140 van de Iraakse grondwet dient er door een referendum te worden beslist of de stad en de streek door de Iraakse regering bestuurd blijven worden of zullen worden bestuurd door de Koerdische Autonome Regio.
