Solothurn (im örtlichen schweizerdeutschen Dialekt Soledurn [ˈsɔlədʊːrn] oder [ˈsɔːlədʊːrn], französisch Soleure, italienisch Soletta, rätoromanisch , lateinisch Salodurum) ist eine Einwohnergemeinde und der Hauptort des Kantons Solothurn in der Schweiz. Die Stadt mit ihren knapp 17'000 Einwohnern (Stand: 31. Dezember 2019) bildet einen Bezirk für sich. Der Kantonshauptort Solothurn ist zudem ein Zentrum einer Region mit rund 79'000 Einwohnern. Da der Gesandte Frankreichs bei der Alten Eidgenossenschaft seinen Sitz in Solothurn hatte (zwischen dem 16. und 18. Jahrhundert), wird die Stadt auch als «Ambassadorenstadt» bezeichnet, und aufgrund ihres Schutzpatrons ist sie überdies unter dem Namen «Sankt-Ursen-Stadt» bekannt. Die Altstadt wurde in ihrem heutigen Zustand zum grössten Teil zwischen den Jahren 1520 und 1790 errichtet und weist dementsprechend eine Mischung verschiedener Architekturstile und Formensprachen auf, vor allem aber Bauten des Barocks, weshalb Solothurn zuweilen auch als «schönste Barockstadt der Schweiz» bezeichnet wird.
