The area's diverse transportation systems offer quick access to these markets, with Interstate Highways 39, 90, and 43 connecting us to other Wisconsin and Illinois communities as well as the rest of the nation. South Beloit was rich in natural resources, including copper, lead, and bog iron. Winnebago County had abundant buff and blue limestone along the Rock River and Turtle Creek. Early settlers used buff limestone for houses and public buildings still visible in Rockford, Rockton, Beloit, and South Beloit. The area also featured fine sand deposits and high- quality clay that was attractive to industries. Many Peoples have inhabited South Beloit over the years, including the Mound Builders, Sioux, and Illinswek (Illinois). Around 1830, a large Ho-Chunk village known as Ke-Chunk (Turtle Village) existed near the mouth of Turtle Creek close to the Illinois-Wisconsin state line in what is now Beloit, Wisconsin or South Beloit, Illinois. The word Ke-chunk (properly Kečąk), means “turtle” and was used to denote the Ho-Chunk village on Turtle Creek.
