添え字（そえじ）は、文字の右上、左上、右下、左下のいずれかに書かれる文字のことである。上付き文字や下付き文字も添え字のひとつであるほか、漢文の送り仮名も添え字である。 縦書きで表記する場合には、冪乗を表す場合を除き上付き文字や下付き文字という言葉は使用されない。
