The name is derived from Alemannic German Sunt-gowe ("South shire"), denoting an Alemannic county in the Old High German period. The principal city and historical capital is Altkirch.

Il Sundgau è un territorio situato nella parte meridionale de dipartimento dell'Alto Reno nella regione dell'Alsazia (Francia). Il suo nome deriva dal tedesco alemanno (dall'unione dei termini sund, o "sud" e gau, o "contea"), con il significato di "contea del Sud". In francese antico era anche scritto come Sundgow. Il centro principale è Altkirch, capoluogo di arrondissement di cui fanno parti inoltre i cantoni di Dannemarie, di Hirsingue e di Ferrette, e che corrisponde quasi esattamente al territorio del Pays du Sundgau. Il Sundgau confina a est con la valle del Reno, a sud con la Svizzera, ad ovest con il dipartimento del Territorio di Belfort nella regione della Franca Contea, a nord con le vallate dei fiumi Thur e Doller (affluenti del fiume Ill), che costituiscono il territorio del Pays Thur Doller (corrispondente all'arrondissement di Thann). È prossimo alle agglomerazioni di Mulhouse, Basilea, Thann-Cernay e Belfort-Montbéliard.
