Its scores are impressive. Even if fewer critics are reviewing it compared to other shows, with twelve in, it has retained its perfect 100%, and has a decent 80% audience score as well. It’s pretty rare Netflix shows get and hold 100% ratings, and the last one I can think of was Baby Reindeer. That eventually dropped to a 98%, but it had way more reviews and much more reach, a surefire Emmy contender even as Netflix may soon be embroiled in a lawsuit over the real-life story it claims to portray. Supacell is a less controversial feature, created by Rapman, a rapper and record producer but also a director and screenwriter. He created a unique superhero story almost exclusively featuring black characters and all black heroes, something we just don’t see in the medium often, if ever. Moving on to spoiler territory, the show very much ends its short, six-episode run on a cliffhanger, with Michael’s fiancée dying earlier than the future predicted, indicating it’s all prone to change, and the rest of the gang having family members either kidnapped or threatened by the mysterious organization trying to collect them. We went all season effectively not knowing really anything about them, other than they hold people with powers and recruit other people with powers to collect more people with powers. There’s an implication they are trying to extract or erase those powers but we don’t get any more details past that. The season did appear to end with its main villain, Krazy, killed off by the group he was working for, so I would not expect him to return for season 2. But there are white, corporate types pulling the strings behind the scenes, and we don’t know anything about them. I see absolutely no reason why Supacell would not be greenlit for a second season. It has everything Netflix wants from a series, a relatively low budget due to non A-list (but talented) actors along with limited VFX, high critic and audience scores and solid viewership. There’s quite literally nothing here that would indicate a season 2 is not coming. But we’ll wait to hear something official, and that often takes anywhere from a couple weeks to over a month after airing. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy .
