I personaggi sono creati da Anne Wood, direttore creativo della Ragdoll, e Andrew Davenport. Dal 9 novembre 2015 è in onda nel Regno Unito una nuova serie (conosciuta come New Teletubbies), prodotta dalla DHX Media che nel frattempo ha acquisito la casa originaria. La serie è divenuta un successo di critica e commerciale in Inghilterra e all'estero. In Italia è stata trasmessa per la prima volta dalla Rai, dapprima su RaiSat Ragazzi (dal 1º luglio 1999) e poi, in chiaro, su Rai 2 e Rai 3 (dal giugno 2000). Nel 2022 viene prodotto da Netflix un remake della serie, con novità e contenuti originali. La serie è composta da 26 episodi da 15 minuti l'uno.
