Theodor Nöldeke

Theodor Nöldeke was a German linguist, translator, university teacher, and orientalist. He was born in Harburg on 2 March 1836 and died in Karlsruhe on 25 December 1930. He was educated at Leiden University, the University of Göttingen, the University of Vienna, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His professional career included teaching positions at Kiel University and the University of Göttingen.

Nöldeke’s work focused on oriental studies, and he wrote in German and Latin. He was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony, the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He received the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art. His notable works include *Assyrios Syrios Syros*, *Grammatik der neusyrischen Sprache*, and *Geschichte des Qorāns*. He is buried at the Hauptfriedhof Karlsruhe.
