Thermotoga on perekond termofiilseid anaeroobseid baktereid hõimkonnast Thermotogae, mida ümbritseb valguline tupetaoline välismembraan ehk tooga. Sellesse perekonda kuuluvaid baktereid on eraldatud peamiselt kontinentaalsetest väävlirikastest kuumaveeallikatest. Nad kääritavad suhkruid atsetaadi moodustamisega ja kasutavad elektronide aktseptorina väävlit ja prootoneid. Protsessi käigus tekkiv vesinik on neile toksiline ja väävli juuresolekul moodustavad nad sellest vesiniksulfiidi (H2S). Nende optimaalne kasvutemperatuur on umbes 80 °C ja maksimaalne 90 °C. Tüüpliik on Thermotoga maritima, mida kirjeldati esmakordselt 1986. aastal ja mille genoom sekveneeriti 1999. aastal. Selgus, et genoomis esineb mitmeid arhedele (eriti Pyrococcus horikoshii-le) iseloomulikke geene ja seega oletati horisontaalset geeniülekannet. Neil on palju erinevaid glükosiidide hüdrolaase (näiteks tsellulaase, ksülanaase, jt) kodeerivaid geene. Et tegu on termofiilsete bakteritega, siis vastavatel termostabiilsetel ehk kõrgeid temperatuure taluvatel valkudel võib esineda biotehnologilisi rakendusviise. Thermotoga is a genus of the phylum Thermotogota. Members of Thermotoga are hyperthermophilic bacteria whose cell is wrapped in a unique sheath-like outer membrane, called a "toga".
The members of the phylum stain Gram-negative as they possess a thin peptidoglycan in between two lipid bilayers, albeit both peculiar. The peptidoglycan is unusual as the crosslink is not only meso-diaminopimelate as occurs in Pseudomonadota, but D-lysine.
