The town was founded in 1968 to house construction workers on the Upper Waitaki Hydroelectric Scheme. Today, Twizel is a service and tourist town for visitors to the area. It has a resident population of during the summer, holidaymakers nearly triple the town's population.

twizel.info →I have been Twizel-based since 2007 when I followed my baby daddy here on a new adventure, like so many others that now call Twizel home. Seeing Twizel as a prosperous community and town for current Twizelites, future families, and those that move here is why I joined Twizel Promotions. I love being part of an organisation that benefits and gives back to our local town. And it's great to be part of fun and amazing projects and events.

Nearby Lake Ruataniwha supports rowing, sailing and water skiing. Twizel is 37 km (29 minutes drive) east of Lake Ōhau village, 30 km (20 minutes drive) north of Omarama and 60 km (42 minutes drive) south of Lake Tekapo.
