Tirol ist eine Region in den Ostalpen im Westen Österreichs und Norden Italiens. Seit dem Jahr 2011 besitzt das historische Gebiet mit der Europaregion Tirol–Südtirol–Trentino eine eigene Rechtspersönlichkeit in Form eines Europäischen Verbundes für territoriale Zusammenarbeit. Das Gebiet stand einst als Grafschaft Tirol lange Zeit unter einer gemeinsamen Herrschaft. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg und dem Zusammenbruch der Habsburgermonarchie Österreich-Ungarn war auch Tirol betroffen und wurde im Jahre 1919 durch den Vertrag von St. Germain geteilt: 1. * Nordtirol und Osttirol (das heutige Bundesland Tirol) verblieben bzw. gehörten fortan zur neuen Republik Österreich. 2. * Südtirol und Welschtirol, die bis auf wenige abgetrennte Gemeinden die heutige Autonome Region Trentino-Südtirol bilden, wurden im November 1918 militärisch besetzt und kamen 1919/20 auch formal zum Königreich Italien.
