== Etymology == As per Hindu mythology, Agastya arrived at the Kaithamalai hillock in the region to meditate. He couldn't find any water there and prayed to Murugan for help. Murugan appeared and created a source of water, which came to be known as Utrukuli, and later became Uthukuli.
