Voltaire (pronunciato in italiano /volˈtɛr/; in francese [vɔltɛ:ʀ]), pseudonimo di François-Marie Arouet ([fʀɑ̃swa maʀi aʀwɛ]; Parigi, 21 novembre 1694 – Parigi, 30 maggio 1778) è stato un filosofo, drammaturgo, storico, scrittore, poeta, aforista, enciclopedista, autore di fiabe, romanziere e saggista francese. Il nome di Voltaire è legato al movimento culturale dell'illuminismo, di cui fu uno degli animatori e degli esponenti principali insieme a Montesquieu, Locke, Rousseau, Diderot, d'Alembert, d'Holbach e du Châtelet, tutti gravitanti attorno all'ambiente dell'Encyclopédie. La vasta produzione letteraria di Voltaire si caratterizza per l'ironia, la chiarezza dello stile, la vivacità dei toni e la polemica contro le ingiustizie e le superstizioni. Deista, cioè seguace della religione naturale che vede la divinità come estranea al mondo e alla storia, ma scettico, fortemente anticlericale e laico, Voltaire è considerato uno dei principali ispiratori del pensiero razionalista e non religioso moderno. Le idee e le opere di Voltaire, così come quelle degli altri illuministi, hanno ispirato e influenzato moltissimi pensatori, politici e intellettuali contemporanei e successivi e ancora oggi sono molto diffuse. In particolare hanno influenzato protagonisti della rivoluzione americana, come Benjamin Franklin e Thomas Jefferson, e di quella francese, come Jean Sylvain Bailly (che tenne una proficua corrispondenza epistolare con Voltaire), Condorcet (anche lui enciclopedista) e in parte Robespierre, oltre che molti altri filosofi come Cesare Beccaria, Karl Marx e Friedrich Nietzsche.
