Lançado em 27 de fevereiro de 2008 o Windows Server 2008 foi conhecido pelo codinome Server Longhorn até 16 de maio de 2007 quando Bill Gates, presidente da Microsoft, anunciou o seu nome oficial. Um segundo lançamento, chamado Windows Server 2008 R2, foi lançado para fabricação em 22 de julho de 2009.
