Wurmlöcher sind theoretische Gebilde, die sich aus speziellen Lösungen (Kruskal-Lösungen) der Feldgleichungen der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie ergeben. Erstmals wurden sie im Jahre 1916 von Ludwig Flamm sowie erneut im Jahre 1935 von Albert Einstein und Nathan Rosen beschrieben. Sie werden daher auch Einstein-Rosen-Brücke genannt. Der englische Begriff wormhole wurde 1957 von John Archibald Wheeler geprägt. Der Name Wurmloch stammt von der Analogie mit einem Wurm, der sich durch einen Apfel hindurchfrisst. Er verbindet damit zwei Seiten desselben Raumes (der Oberfläche) mit einem Tunnel. Das veranschaulicht das Merkmal der Kruskal-Lösungen, zwei Orte im Universum zu verbinden.
