Zarqa is Jordan's industrial centre. It is home to over 50% of Jordanian factories. The growth of industry in the city is the result of low real estate costs and proximity to the capital Amman.
There are three universities in Zarqa, the largest of which is Hashemite University. The other two are Al-Balqa` Applied University and Zarqa University. Other community colleges and research centres are based in Zarqa such as the Al-Zarqa Educational & Investment Centre.

La popolazione è di 635.160 abitanti (2015), formando il 6,1% del totale nazionale; il suo nome significa "l'Azzurra". Centro industriale giordano, ospita il 50% delle industrie della Giordania: ciò dipende dallo sviluppo del settore edile e dalla vicinanza alla popolosa capitale di Amman. La popolazione vi si trasferì da ogni parte del regno fin dagli anni quaranta. Inoltre, più del 50% degli abitanti è giunto dalla Cisgiordania a seguito della Guerra dei sei giorni.
