Akanthit (veraltet Silberglanz) ist ein eher selten vorkommendes Mineral aus der Mineralklasse der „Sulfide und Sulfosalze“ mit der chemischen Zusammensetzung Ag2S, besteht also aus Silber und Schwefel im Verhältnis 2 : 1 und ist damit chemisch gesehen Silbersulfid. Akanthit kristallisiert im monoklinen Kristallsystem und entwickelt meist nadelförmige oder spießige, oft pseudokubische Kristalle, aber auch massige Aggregate von grauer bis schwarzer Farbe.
