Advent (lateinisch adventus „Ankunft“), eigentlich adventus Domini (lat. für Ankunft des Herrn), bezeichnet die Jahreszeit, in der die Christenheit sich auf das Fest der Geburt Jesu Christi, Weihnachten, vorbereitet. Zugleich erinnert der Advent daran, dass Christen das zweite Kommen Jesu Christi erwarten sollen. Der Advent beginnt nach katholischer wie evangelischer Tradition mit der Vesper am Vorabend des ersten Adventssonntags und mit ihm auch das neue Kirchenjahr.
