Alonso de Ercilla

Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga was a Spanish explorer, poet, writer, and soldier born in Madrid in 1533. He wrote in Spanish and was a member of the House of Zúñiga. His literary output includes narrative poetry, with notable works such as *La Araucana de Don Alonso*, *Primera y segvnda parte de la Araucana*, *Aravcana de Don Alonso de Erzilla y Zvñiga*, *Tercera parte de la Araucana*, and *Los romances basados en La Araucana*.

He died in Madrid in 1594. His works are held in the Memoria Chilena collection and have been described by sources including Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography, Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary, The Nuttall Encyclopædia, and the Encyclopædia Britannica 11th edition.
