Maximum longevity: 40 years (captivity) Observations: Manatees may feature some form of continuous tooth development (Caleb Finch 1990). It is estimated that they can live 30 years in the wild (David Macdonald 1985), but probably longer. One wild born specimen was still alive in captivity at 40 years of age (Richard Weigl 2005).

Encyclopedic overview
The Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis), commonly referred to as cowfish in Brazil, is a species of manatee that lives in the Amazon Basin in Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. It has thin, wrinkled brownish or gray colored skin, with fine hairs scattered over its body and a white chest patch. It is the smallest of the three extant species of manatee.
