Bathory fue un grupo sueco de black metal y viking metal, fueron formados en Vällingby, Estocolmo en 1983 por Quorthon. El nombre del grupo proviene de la «Condesa Sangrienta», Erzsébet Báthory. Bathory, Venom, Celtic Frost y Hellhammer fueron las bandas más importantes para el desarrollo del black metal. Mientras que Venom tuvo el honor de bautizar el nuevo subgénero, a Bathory se le acredita ser el grupo más importante en el desarrollo del black metal y el viking metal. La historia de la banda terminó en 2004 tras la muerte de Quorthon por un infarto agudo de miocardio.
