Botrychium
Sign in to saveBotrychium is a genus of ferns, seedless vascular plants in the family Ophioglossaceae. Botrychium species are known as moonworts. They are small, with fleshy roots, and reproduce by spores shed into the air. One part of the leaf, the trophophore, is sterile and fernlike; the other, the sporophore, is fertile and carries the clusters of sporangia or spore cases. Some species only occasionally emerge above ground and gain most of their nourishment from an association with mycorrhizal fungi.

(1800) subgenus Sceptridium De botanische naam Sceptridium is afgeleid van het Oudgriekse σκῆπτρον, skēptron (staf), naar de langgesteelde vruchtbare sporoforen. Kenmerken Sceptridium zijn kleine tot middelgrote terrestrische varens met vlezige wortels. Elke plant kan uit twee componenten bestaan, een gesteelde, onvruchtbare, bladvormige trofofoor en een vruchtbare sporofoor, met een gemeenschappelijk steel. In tegenstelling tot de Botrychium zijn er ook planten die enkel onvruchtbare bladen dragen. De trofoforen zijn in tegenstelling tot die van Botrychium twee- of drievoudig gedeeld, en in tegenstelling tot die van Botrypus winterhard; de oude sporoforen verdwijnen pas in de volgende lente. De sporofoor is in tegenstelling tot die van Botrypus langgesteeld en eveneens twee- tot drievoudig gedeeld.
