A plant that can sew? The next time you walk on the higher part of the beach, look for grass, or something that looks like grass. If the plants seem to be growing along an invisible line, then chances are you have found sand sedge. Just take a good look at the picture above. The plant develops very long thin horizontal root stocks. New plants emerge regularly along this line, making it look like a sewing machine was at work. The blades of the sand sedge catch light wind-blown sand, which makes it an important plant for dune formation.
