Es un derivado del proyecto de código abierto Chromium OS y usa el navegador web Google Chrome como interfaz de usuario. Google anunció el proyecto el 7 de julio de 2009, describiéndolo inicialmente como un sistema operativo donde las aplicaciones y los datos de los usuarios residirían en la nube. ChromeOS se utilizó principalmente para ejecutar aplicaciones web.​ Todas las versiones de ChromiumOS y ChromeOS admiten (como Google Docs o Microsoft Office 365), así como extensiones de navegador web (que pueden parecerse a las aplicaciones nativas).
