Neben den Gürteltieren werden noch eine Reihe weiterer Gruppen zu den Gepanzerten Nebengelenktieren gezählt. Das Verbreitungsgebiet umfasst nahezu das gesamte Südamerika und die südlichen Teile Nordamerikas. Als Besonderheit der Gruppe hat sich ein äußerer knöcherner Panzer herausgebildet, der aus einzelnen Knochenplättchen besteht (Osteoderme) und sowohl den Kopf, den Rücken sowie bei den meisten Arten auch den Schwanz bedeckt. Die heute allgemein anerkannte wissenschaftliche Bezeichnung Cingulata wurde im Jahr 1811 geprägt.
