Цирк (лат. circus «круг») у древних римлян — общественное сооружение в виде вытянутого овала; место конских скачек и состязаний в скорости езды на колесницах, а впоследствии и некоторых других зрелищ, происходивших в известные праздничные дни и называвшихся цирковыми играми (лат. ludi circenses). В современном языке аналогичное сооружение называется греческим словом ипподром.
