CAR-15（Colt Automatic Rifle-15 Military Weapons System）是在1960年代以AR-15的設計改良而成。由於尺寸緊密，Colt Commando及XM177系列在越南戰爭中亦有出現。 柯爾特在1959年獲得阿瑪萊特（ArmaLite）的AR-15的專利權和技術時，柯爾特把名稱定為CAR-15，是為了在CAR-15服役後把AR-15槍族聯繫起來。其後柯爾特放棄CAR-15的專利權，但以M16的商標繼續生產各种軍用衍生型及以Colt AR-15商標生產執行部門及民用型号。 嚴格來說，CAR-15是M16或AR-15的卡賓槍及縮短版的名稱。
