Ihre Vorfahren lebten zusammen mit den sprachlich und kulturell verwandten Östlichen Shoshone einst am Oberlauf des Platte River im Osten Wyomings, bevor sie Anfang/Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts über das Große Becken nach Süden und Südosten auf die Central Plains vordrangen. Ab 1750 waren die Comanchen die dominante militärische sowie politische Macht der Südlichen Plains und hatten ein Handelsnetzwerk in den Grenzregionen im Südwesten der Vereinigten Staaten etabliert. Als nomadische Plainsindianer gehörten sie zum Kulturareal der Prärien und Plains, hatten jedoch manche Traditionen der Stämme des Großen Beckens beibehalten.
