Per comunicazione (dal latino communico = mettere in comune, far partecipe, composto da cum = con e munire = legare, costruire) si intende il processo e le modalità di trasmissione di un'informazione da un individuo a un altro (o da un luogo a un altro), attraverso lo scambio di un messaggio elaborato secondo le regole di un determinato codice comune. Ma siccome non c'è comunicazione in assenza del processo di ricezione, la comunicazione umana (ad esempio) necessita di almeno due individui entrambi in grado sia di trasmettere che di ricevere, i messaggi elaborati in un codice comune (direttamente o in differita nel tempo). E dunque, dovrebbe intendersi come il processo e le modalità di trasmissione e ricezione di informazioni, ecc. In questo senso, la TV e la radio, non sono mezzi di comunicazione, ma solo di trasmissione. Al contrario, il sistema postale, il telefono o i ricetrasmettitori radio (CB, ecc.) sono a tutti gli effetti mezzi di comunicazione.
