Bevorzugte Lebensräume sind Laub- und Mischwälder mit hohem Eichenanteil; die Blaumeise ist auch häufig in Parkanlagen und Gärten zu finden. Außer in Europa kommt sie in einigen angrenzenden Gebieten Asiens vor, in Nordafrika und auf den Kanarischen Inseln. Die Population der Kanaren wird oft auch als eigene Art angesehen (Afrikanische Blaumeise, Cyanistes teneriffae). Die Blaumeise bevorzugt tierische Nahrung, vor allem Insekten und Spinnen. Außerhalb der Fortpflanzungsperiode steigt die Bedeutung von Sämereien und anderer pflanzlicher Kost.
