David J. Thouless

David J. Thouless was a male physicist and university teacher specializing in nuclear physics. Born in Bearsden in 1934, he was educated at Trinity Hall, Cornell University, and Clare Hall. His academic career included positions at the University of Washington, the University of Birmingham, and Yale University. He studied under doctoral advisor Hans Bethe and supervised doctoral student Michael Kosterlitz.

Thouless held citizenship in the United Kingdom and the United States. He was a member of the Royal Society, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His honors included the Holweck Prize, the Fritz London Award, the Wolf Prize in Physics, and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society. He received one Nobel Prize.

He died in Cambridge in 2019 from dementia due to natural causes. Thouless spoke English and had three children. His work is recognized in the Royal Society collection, the Nobel Laureates collection, the Nobel Physics collection, and the American Academy Arts Sciences collection.
