Iniciando a sua carreira no Brasil, brilhou no futebol vestindo as camisas do Futebol Clube do Porto, do Barcelona e do Chelsea, tendo vencido duas Liga dos Campeões da UEFA e uma Copa da UEFA. Além disso, foi considerado o melhor jogador da Europa na temporada 2003–04. Seu último clube foi o Fluminense. Anunciou sua aposentadoria na manhã do dia 26 de agosto de 2013. "Fisicamente poderia jogar, mas os meus músculos não suportam mais", declarou. Despediu-se do futebol num amistoso entre Porto de 2004 e Barcelona de 2006, times pelos quais teve destaque. A partida foi realizada no Estádio do Dragão, estádio pertencente ao Porto, clube do seu coração, no dia 25 de julho de 2014. Deco jogou pelos dois times e marcou um gol para cada. O jogo terminou 4 a 4.
