In the Middle Ages, like the names Alvidék ("lower land") and Végvidék ("borderland"), referred to the Hungarian counties (Verőce, Pozsega, Szerém, Bács, Torontál, Temes, Keve) and vassal banates (Macsó, Ózora, Só, Szörény) beyond the Danube and the Sava.
