Dirck van Baburen

Dirck van Baburen was a male painter from the Dutch Republic, born on January 1, 1595. He worked in Utrecht, Italy, Parma, and Rome. His career included a period of study under Paulus Moreelse. He was a member of the Bentvueghels and is associated with the Utrecht Caravaggism movement. Baburen received sponsorship from Vincenzo Giustiniani.

He is the creator of the notable work *The Procuress*. His paintings are held in the collections of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Städel Museum, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. He is described in sources including *The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters*, *Het Gulden Cabinet*, and *Teutsche Academie der Edlen Bau- Bild- und Mahlerey-Künste*. Baburen spoke, wrote, or signed in Dutch. He died in Utrecht on February 21, 1624.
