Dirk Jan Struik

Dirk Jan Struik was a Dutch mathematician, historian, and university teacher born in Rotterdam in 1894. He was educated at Leiden University, Sapienza University of Rome, and the University of Göttingen. His academic career included teaching positions at Utrecht University, Delft University of Technology, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the International Academy of the History of Science, and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Struik received the Kenneth O. May Prize and had an Erdős number of 4. He authored works such as *History of mathematics*, *A mathematician's faith*, and *Outline of a history of differential geometry*. He was married to Saly Ruth Ramler and resided in both the Netherlands and the United States. Struik died in Belmont in 2000. His archives are held at the International Institute of Social History.
