Como jogador, sua maior conquista foi a Copa do Mundo FIFA de 1994, disputada nos Estados Unidos, sendo o capitão da Seleção Brasileira. Como treinador, teve sua nomeação para ser o técnico do Brasil em 24 de julho de 2006, conquistando a Copa América de 2007 e a Copa das Confederações FIFA de 2009. Retornou ao comando da Seleção no dia 22 de julho de 2014, permanecendo até junho de 2016. Foi considerado pela revista Época um dos 100 brasileiros mais influentes do ano de 2009.
